Policy Thailand approves 35% tax on imported electric cars
Thailand’s cabinet approved a 35% excise tax on imported battery-electric and range-extender cars from 1 January 2027. The finance ministry says the current rate is 10% for battery-electric cars and 15% for range-extender cars. The effect will depend on the final rules, including how investment incentives and local assembly are treated. At the L03’s launch in August, XPeng vice-president James Wu said XPeng would decide on a factory in Thailand once the tax rules were clear. MGC, co-owner of XPeng’s Thai distributor, says it and XPeng are planning imports and deliveries through about mid-2027. The partners are studying a Thai factory, including production volumes and the supply of local parts.
