XPeng Robotaxi cleared for Guangzhou road tests with no safety operator in the driver's seat

XPeng said on 27 August that its Robotaxi had received a Guangzhou permit for remote testing of intelligent connected vehicles, allowing road tests with no safety operator in the driver's seat on designated Level 1, 2 and 3 test roads across the city. Since employee testing began in June, the Robotaxi — built on the GX and running XPeng's second-generation VLA model — had completed more than 2,000 internal test rides in two months. XPeng described demonstration operations as "counting down"; its goal, restated on the 24 August earnings call, is passenger service with no safety operator on board in 2027, with leading ride-hailing platforms in China and abroad.
